IC Information
Character Name: Davesprite
Character Canon: Homestuck – OU.
Character Age/Gender: 14, roughly. It’s not entirely clear whether Davesprite would have aged as a sprite, but for my purposes I’m going to assume a certain amount of growth- more sluggish than in a normal kid, but still with an obvious difference over a few years’ time.
Canon Point: End of the first year travelling from the session of the kids playing the beta version of Sburb to the session of the kids playing the alpha version of Sburb.
Character Canon History: I’m going to go more or less chronologically, because… it’s kind of crazy.
Dec 3, 1995: meteor takes out record shop in Houston, leaving behind a baby and a dead horse, both of which get picked up by Bro Strider- at this point there’s just one Dave; the timeline split happens later. Bro raises Dave after this, teaching him what he knows- from the panel, probably about age four for Dave- turntables and mixing, swords, irony.
At some point Dave meets the other kids online- probably Jade first, and then Rose and John- and slowly becomes friends with them, enough to eventually exchange real names and addresses- John sends Dave a pair of movie memorabilia sunglasses for his thirteenth, which Dave takes to wearing instead of the ones his Bro gave him, I assume Rose and Jade would probably also have done something which we didn’t see.
April 13, 2009 was John’s birthday, and pretty much when everything started, being the day all four kids get their copies of Sburb and start playing. Dave lost his own copy when a crow came into his room, grabbed them and he reacted by yelling at it and accidentally launching his sword from his sylladex through the crow and his window. Consequently, when Rose’s life is in danger and Sburb is the only way to get her out, Dave had to retrieve his bro’s copies, since he’d promised in an earlier conversation that if that situation ever came about, he’d play the game. He searched the apartment for them first, and ended up strifing with his bro on the roof for them. He lost, but got the copies all the same. This made him Rose’s server player, with the capacity to make changes to her house (the main aim being to build up, eventually) and deploy the tools vital to entering the Medium, the environment in which Sburb takes place, including the card containing the special item needed to enter the Medium- in Rose’s case, a wine bottle. Rose prototyped her kernelsprite for the first time with her dead cat, and Dave prototyped it a second time with a tentacled princess doll, allowing the sprite to catch Rose when she dives off to catch the bottle and bring her back to solid ground.
Jade played the part of Dave’s server in turn, placing the devices necessary to prepare to enter the Medium in the apartment and on the roof, and prototyping his kernelsprite with the crow stabbed through with Dave’s katana. They crafted the special item Dave needed, a red egg, and Dave’s kernelsprite took off with it to the highest point of the building, along with a whole bunch of stuff Dave had initially collected to use in the strife with his Bro but didn’t actually use in the heat of the moment. Dave goes after it, with no clear idea of what he’s planning to do, but the kernelsprite pecks at him when he gets closer and Dave falls back to the roof of the apartment. The meteor over Dave’s place is getting pretty close at this point, but Bro has his sword and rocketboard and cuts the thing in half, buying enough time for the egg to hatch and get Dave into the Medium.
In this timeline, John died before he could pick up the server Sburb disk and connect to Jade as her client, leading to a doomed timeline in which the Battlefield could not reach its final form. Dave and Rose went on in this timeline with no other option until Dave found a pair of turntables which enabled him to utilise his abilities as Knight of Time to move through time. At this point, Rose suggested that instead of going back, they stayed to learn as much as they could to make sure that they came closer to winning in that timeline, and Dave agreed.
This period of time is not expanded upon much in canon: what we do know is that Dave and Rose reached the top of their echeladders and had the best weapons available to them in the session, but were unable to defeat their Denizens or complete the tasks necessary for the session to bear fruit. Dave did go so far as to meet his Denizen, Hephaetus, but evaluated Hephaetus as too dangerous and absconded after snapping a captcha shot of Hephaetus’ hammer. With this in mind, and thoroughly fed up with his own sprite, at four months into this timeline, he declared his intention to Rose to return to the past and change events.
Dave came back from that future to the time when his past self was talking to John before John took off for the seventh gate, passing on the message to his past self to tell John not to go before joining the conversation himself. He then ejected everything from his sylladex, leaving it and the responsibility of looking after this timeline to his other self, and did a backwards somersault into the Crowsprite. Now Davesprite, he offered to give the prime timeline Dave all the knowledge he could now access as a sprite without all the riddles, and while Dave at the time asked an irrelevant, somewhat self-absorbed question at the time, it seems likely that Davesprite would have aided Dave as much as possible within the limits of the game and Dave’s propensity to ask for aid from him.
Eventually, there was a point where Davesprite felt that Dave could handle himself and the timeline well enough from that point on to not need him any more. He defended Dave against waves on enemies sent by Hephaetus to try to reclaim the piece of broken sword Dave had just taken, and then freed himself of his obligations as a sprite to the player, taking off in search of Bro. He eventually found Bro facing Jack Noir (who had claimed the ring of the Black Queen in the kids’ session and consequently its powers and the prototyping) and joined him in the fight. They were holding their own, until the time came for Jade to prototype her sprite and enter the Medium. John had intended to prototype one of Jade’s grandad’s blue-haired dolls, but Vriska- another of the trolls messing with the kids- knocked him out, and Jade’s dog Becquerel prototyped himself instead. This gave Jack Noir the power of the Green Sun, a source used by all First Guardians that served to give them powers over space and knowledge, and he killed Bro without further trouble and severely wounded Davesprite, slicing away his right wing and through his midsection.
Jack took off after that, and at some point Davesprite got himself together enough to be able to go on. He decided to continue on with Dave’s quest, since it didn’t look like Dave was likely to finish it himself, and obtained Caledfwlch, the sword Dave had obtained previously on the quest, and went to find Hephaetus. Jade had lit the volcano on her planet, the forge Hephaetus needed, and Hephaetus offered Davesprite a choice. Davesprite chose to ask him to repair the sword, and then headed for the Battlefield, where meteors were falling.
He met Jadesprite there, prototyped some time previously with Jade’s deceased dream self, and she sent the Royal Deringer to the Derse moon, to Rose and alpha Dave. They stayed on the Battlefield, even as a meteor came straight towards them. At this point, the power that resurrects players with an active dream self kicked into gear, and Jade rose up as the fully realised Witch of Space, making the meteor coming towards them tiny and then taking off to take the rest of the planets before they were erased by the Scratch. With everyone on board a Prospit battleship, Jade took Davesprite and the rest on board through the fourth wall, to the reset session created by the Scratch, where they would catch up with Dave, Rose, the surviving trolls, and the kids of that session. Davesprite contributed to a message for the trolls, Dave and Rose, and this began three years of travel between sessions.
Character Personality: Davesprite is still somewhat similar in personality to the alpha timeline Dave- they’ve had the same experiences for most of their life, and value fairly similar things. After all, until the timeline split, they were the same person, and it seems fairly evident that both Dave and Davesprite consider themselves close enough to still being the same person. However, Davesprite spent at least four months in the offshoot timeline, enough to reasonably establish some separation, though at the point he’s taken from he’s not acknowledging that or perhaps simply hasn’t quite made the distinction. During the kids’ session, Davesprite clearly has to restablish that he and Dave are essentially the same person at at least one point, when he and Dave are talking about Dave’s quest.
Bro taught Dave to try to keep his emotions behind a mask- one Dave wasn’t particularly good at, and one that it could be suggested is worse on Davesprite, given that two of his best friends died. When he talks, he doesn’t use as many of the extended metaphors alpha timeline Dave is prone to, and when he talks about the sword Dave has to break to get it out of the altar, it’s without any riddles that another sprite might have used. He might have got somewhat out of the habit of it, in an attempt to subvert Rose’s tendency towards wordiness.
Davesprite doesn’t appear to have established many deep friendships before Sburb happened- probably people were somewhat frightened off by his attitude, generally being standoffish, and perhaps his tendency towards filling up the space with words. However, in turn, this means the friendships he does have mean a lot to him, and it would have bothered him deeply that he lost John and Jade in one blow, leaving him with just Rose to turn towards. John’s reaction to him being a sprite rather than the alpha timeline Dave would have been read as a rejection, and while Davesprite pretends that doesn’t hurt, it probably cut a lot. John was the person he went back to save most directly, after all, though he definitely cares for Jade as well.
Essentially, Davesprite wants the best for his friends- to protect them if he can, to make sure they come out of the situation as well as he can make it. His title was Knight, after all.
Davesprite already had self-confidence problems as Dave, considering that Bro was most often the winner in their Strife sessions and Dave appears likely to have considered Bro his senior and therefore better in most other areas as well. These seem like they’ve been amplified by becoming a sprite- he’s essentially playing a support role to himself there (read: playing second fiddle), and John doesn’t really consider Davesprite to have quite the same value as Dave from the alpha timeline. Jade appears to be trying to be supportive of him, and this seems to bolster him somewhat- some time into the second year of the journey between sessions, they’re playing games together, and that seems likely to have started some time in the first year.
AU Information: N/A
Character Abilities: Sprites are pretty much there to aid and support their players. They are able to use beams based upon their prototypings to fight enemies, and can use similar beams to restore the health of the player. Davesprite has also displayed the ability to use his sprite powers to scrawl messages and pictures on various surfaces. He preferred to use the sword that was part of him (prototyped as part of the crow) to fight with, rather than the beams, as that was what he’d learnt to fight with.
When human, Davesprite could also flashstep, moving at incredible speed between spots.
Character Inventory: Sunglasses with inbuilt computer and associated applications, including internet and IM program Pesterchum. At this point in canon it’s not clear whether he actually is carrying anything else, in a sylladex or otherwise, but I’m going to go with not.

Third person/introspective:
He wasn’t used to this many people being around any more. The Land of Heat and Clockwork had had all the nakkodiles around, sure, and Rose was more than happy to fill up his Pesterchum window if he’d really wanted, but- it wasn’t the same as all these bodies, all the chatter that was going on around him. People could just bump into him casually, apologise, and wander on without any more thought put into that- they didn’t have anything to worry about like he and the others had had- and it disconcerted him, enough that he had to take several steps back, his back against a wall, watching the crowd.
It worried him somewhat, to tell the truth, though he didn’t look it, hands shoved into his pockets, eyes covered so no one could tell exactly where his eyes were darting. He hadn’t thought he was this out of sorts with people; but then again, it’d been ages since he’d seen more than Jade and John, and maybe Nannasprite and the carapaces counted, but they still weren’t like this. Alive, and with their own lives that were perfectly normal, and didn’t have any more concerns than what they were going to have for dinner.
That much was a relief, at least. Sure, it was kind of a pain to have to remember what was normal again, but here he could feel normal, and that meant a lot. He’d just have to pretend he knew what was going around him until he could slide in naturally. Not a problem; he was pretty used to that.
He straightened up, hands still in his pockets, and moved forwards. No time to start like the present.
